Hi, This is just a brief email to remind you to check your November Trellis Wire, if you haven’t already done so. Elections and other fun stuff are planned. Check it out here.
Here’re some pics from the 2022 SWGGA Picnic
I own a 1/3-acre vineyard (200 vines with NID water), just south of Grass Valley proper, off McCourtney in Mustang Valley. There are three varieties of red grapes for wine making: Zinfandel, Barbera and Cabernet Sauvignon. The vines are going into their 8th year and are good producers. I don’t have the time to invest in becoming a decent wine maker but it would be great if someone that is such an expert took advantage of the grapes.
The annual SWGGA picnic returns
When: August 29 from 5 to 9 PM
Where: Poolside at the Schafer residence in Alta Sierra
What: Our usual potluck format. We will provide the barbecue.
Feature: Your opportunity to taste the wines entered in this year‘s competition
An invitation and other details will follow.
We just bought a property near Round Mountain with 1.25 acres of 5 different red varietals. You may know our place, as this property was previously owned by Gary Glaze.
As much as we LOVE wine and would like to learn more about making wine, we do not have the bandwidth to tend to these lovely vines right now. We would love to find someone interested in taking over the vineyard. Please contact me for more details, Amy Taylor; email@example.com or 510-292-9806
Just in case you missed our meeting last Thursday, we’ve put the video of our visit to Sierra Starr Winery & Vineyard on YouTube.
Thanks to all who contributed to the production… well done!

There are still a couple of openings for Guy Lauterbach’s three session Winemaking Basics class. The first meeting is scheduled for August 22 at 9:00 am at Guy’s Gray Pine Winery. The 2nd meeting will be on a Sunday in mid-September and the 3rd will be on a Sunday in early October, starting at 9:00 am, exact dates to be determined. (Dates are subject to change based on in what is going on in the vineyard and winery.)
Session 1 (Pre-harvest): Sanitation, equipment, crop evaluation.
Session 2: Crush, fermentation, press off.
Session 3: Racking, oaking, aging, bottling.
Masks and other protective COVID safeguards will be required. Participants will be determined on a first come, first served basis.
If you would like to sign up for these sessions, please email Tony Clarabut at firstname.lastname@example.org.
A big thank you to Guy and Gray Pine Winery for providing this opportunity to SWGGA.
Scott and Melissa Melamed recently bought the property off McCourtney Road previously owned by members Randy and Mary Woolwine. They are new to grape growing, but have jumped right into maintaining their 200 vines of Cabernet Sauvignon, Barbera and Zinfandel.
Because they are new to this, they would like to know if someone would be willing to get involved with their new adventure, give some advise, and maybe some help. Looking to the future, maybe someone would want to maintain the vineyard in exchange for grapes. Anything is open for discussion.
If you might be interested, or just discuss this, give Scott a call at 805-415-3749 or email: email@example.com
